New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday praised Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for condemning the Emergency in the Lok Sabha and said it was a wonderful gesture to stand silent in respect of all those who suffered during those days.

Soon after being elected Speaker, Birla read a resolution in the Lok Sabha condemning the Emergency and criticizing the then government led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

A large number of MPs stood silent for a few moments amid protests by Congress MPs and some other opposition members.

"I am glad that the Honorable Speaker strongly condemned the Emergency, highlighted the atrocities committed during it and the way democracy was strangled," Modi said in a post on Twitter.

He said, Emergency was imposed 50 years ago but it is important for today's youth to know about it because it is an apt example of what happens when the Constitution is trampled, public opinion suppressed and institutions destroyed. So what happens? What will happen if it is destroyed?

Modi said that the incidents during the Emergency are an example of what dictatorship is like.
