New Delhi: The government may soon finalize a framework for a state mining index that will serve as a tool for stakeholders and ensure ease of doing mining business, an official said on Wednesday.

The State Mining Index will promote cooperative federalism as well as competition among states, Mines Secretary V L Kantha Rao said at a one-day workshop on State Mining Index here.

Principal Secretaries, Directors and other officials from 26 states participate in the workshop to discuss and finalize the performance indicators and sub-indicators, which are part of the index framework and methodology.

Kantha Rao said that after consultation and feedback from the states, the outline of the State Minin Index will be finalized and released in July 2024 for the actual ranking to be held in April next year.

He said the index would serve as a tool for mining sector stakeholders to understand various aspects related to ease of doing mining business in the State.

The Secretary also requested the States to help in data collection efforts for timely submission of statistical returns.
