Israel, at the behest of the US, has agreed to a three-step ceasefire proposal with mediators from Egypt and Qatar putting forward the Hamas proposal.

The Israeli side has agreed to a permanent ceasefire after the first round of hostage releases in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh will lead the delegation and hold discussions with Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egypt's intelligence chief Major General Abbas Kamal.

The Hamas leadership had welcomed US President Joe Biden's earlier statement outlining Israel's offer for a permanent ceasefire.

On October 7, Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking 250 hostage in the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to retaliate.
