New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir has seen the highest turnout in Lok Sabha elections in the last 35 years, while the Kashmir Valley has seen a "huge" increase of 30 points in voting participation compared to 2019, the Election Commission said on Monday.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, reacting to the voting percentage, said, "This active participation is a big positive for the soon-to-be-held assembly elections so that the democratic process continues to move forward in the Union Territory."

The election panel also said the combined turnout at polling stations across the Union Territory, which has five Lok Sabha seats, was 58.46 per cent.

On Saturday, CEC Kumar had said that encouraged by the turnout in Jammu and Kashmir in the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission would "very soon" begin the process of holding assembly elections in the Union Territory.

The Valley's three seats - Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag-Rajouri - recorded 38.49 per cent, 59.1 per cent and 54.84 per cent voting respectively, the highest in the last three decades.

The other two seats in the Union Territory - Udhampur and Jammu - recorded 68.27 per cent and 72.22 per cent voting respectively, it said.

The Election Commission said that more youth have largely expressed their faith and embraced democracy.

Voter share in the Union Territory was outlined.

The high voting percentage in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections reflects their faith in democracy, which is a positive and encouraging development, it was stressed.

According to the Election Commission, the number of voters in the 18-59 years age group is more than 80 percent in each of the five Lok Sabha seats in the Union Territory.
