Ranchi: The Jharkhand Cabinet on Friday approved an ambitious financial assistance scheme to empower 45 lakh women of the state and make them self-reliant, an official said.

Under the scheme named 'Mukhyamantri Beti Beti Swablamban Protsahan Yojana', each woman will get Rs 1,000 per month, he said, adding that the state government will bear Rs 5,500 crore annually for the initiative.

This approval was given in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Champai Soren.

"The Cabinet has approved the ambitious plan for the empowerment of women in the state," Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel said.

Manoj Kumar, Secretary, Department of Women, Child Development and Social Security, said that this scheme is applicable for women aged 21 to 50 years. He said income taxpayers, government employees, EPF holders and some other categories have been excluded from the benefits of the scheme.

Kumar stressed that the objective of the scheme is to empower women, make them self-reliant and ensure better education and health improvement.

“The state government will bear Rs 5,500 crore per year for this scheme,” he said.

The department will soon start a campaign to prepare applications so that more and more women can take advantage of it.

In January, the Jharkhand Cabinet had approved a proposal to include all women, tribals and Dalits above 50 years of age in its old-age pension scheme.

Earlier, only people above 60 years of age got the benefit of the scheme, under which Rs 1,000 per month is provided to each beneficiary.
