Ranchi: People suffering from sickle cell anemia in Jharkhand's Khunti district will get a monthly pension of Rs 1,000, an official said on Wednesday.

He said, for the first time in Jharkhand, Khunti district administration has approved pension benefits for persons suffering from sickle cell anemia under the Swami Vivekananda Nishkat Swavalamban Protsahan Yojana.

The brainchild of Khunti Deputy Commissioner (DC) Lokesh Mishra, the Social Security Cell of Khunti has launched the programme.

According to an official statement, in the first phase, nine beneficiaries have been identified from different blocks - three each from Khunti and Karra, two from Murhu and one from Torpa block.

It said, “Under this scheme, an amount of Rs 1000 per month will be given to the beneficiaries throughout their life.,

The release said that if any sickle cell case is detected or identified later, it will be covered under this scheme.

Sickle cell screening of 99,165 persons has been done so far in the district.

Of these, 114 were found to be carriers of sickle cell and a total of 46 persons were found to be suffering from sickle cell anemia-thalassemia disease.

"Nine of them, who are suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia-Thalassemia disease by 40 per cent or more, are being given pension under the Swami Vivekananda Nishkat Swavalamban Protsahan Yojana on the basis of disability certificate," the release said.

At a time when life expectancy of people has increased due to health facilities, the tribal population in Jharkhand is suffering from various diseases.The release said sickle cell anemia is one of the most widespread diseases in the state. Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary blood disease in which red blood cells become sickle-shaped. The cells die quickly, leading to a shortage of healthy red blood cells (sickle cell anemia) and blocked blood flow that can cause pain (sickle cell crisis).

Health experts said there is a need for awareness about the treatment and cure of the disease in remote areas.

Khunti administration operates sickle cell mobile medical vans and conducts sickle cell screening in remote rural areas of the district.

The release said that with the aim of providing proper medical care to the people suffering from sickle cell anemia, a Sickle Cell Anemia-Thalassemia-Day Care Center is also being run at Sadar Hospital, Khunti.
