New Delhi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said he is expressing "deep sorrow" over the death of five army personnel in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district.

Singh said counter-terrorism operations were underway and the troops were committed to "maintaining peace and order" in the area.

On Monday, a group of heavily armed terrorists ambushed a patrolling party in Badnota area of ​​Kathua, killing five Army personnel and injuring several.

"I am deeply saddened by the death of five of our brave Indian Army soldiers in a terrorist attack in Badnota, Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir)," the Defense Minister said on Twitter.

"My deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the nation stands firmly with them in this difficult time. Anti-terrorism operations are ongoing and our troops are committed to restoring peace and order in the region," he said.

"I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured in this cowardly terrorist attack," Singh said.
