Jabalpur: A former government employee from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh has grown a 'mini-forest' on the terrace of his house with about 2,500 bonsai, including species like Peepal and Banyan, in pots.

Sohanlal Dwivedi (74), who retired from Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board 16 years ago, said on Tuesday, "I have been doing bonsai gardening for the last 40 years."

The septuagenarian said he has grown 40 types of plants and trees using the popular Japanese art, including 25 from the sub-group of Ficus species like Peepal and 'Banyan' (banyan).

The septuagenarian said he gives free information on growing bonsai to students in educational institutions.

“I have also trained individuals and forest department officials on growing bonsai of different species,” he said.

The former government official attributes his love for traveling to his extensive collection of potted trees. Wherever he saw a new variety of plant or tree, he brought it home and used it to grow bonsai.

Despite the current heat, Dwivedi said he works hard to keep his bonsai mini-forest green.
