Thane, A man allegedly defrauded a 29-year-old woman from Maharashtra's Thane district of Rs 59.56 lakh by promising to marry her, police said on Monday.

The woman, a resident of Khadakpada in Kalyan area, said in her police complaint that she was introduced to the accused through a matrimonial site in July last year.

After promising to marry her, the man took money from her several times on some pretext or the other, said an officer from Khadakpada police station.

To fulfill her demands, the woman also took money from her family members and friends. The man also pressured him to take a loan on a credit card and he failed to repay it, he said.

When the woman asked for money, he tried to avoid it.

Based on his complaint, the police on Saturday registered an FIR against the man under sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code and the investigation into the case is ongoing, the official said.
