The fire broke out Thursday night in stubble in farming areas spanning the Sinar district of Diyarbakir province and the Majiddağ district of Mardin province, according to a statement by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

Yerlikaya said on Friday that the fire, driven by strong winds, quickly engulfed a large area but was brought under control by firefighters.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç said on social media platform X on Friday that authorities had started an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Deputy Interior Minister Munir Karaloglu said that a total of 15,100 decares (about 1,510 hectares) of land were affected by the fire.

Karaloglou said more than 5,000 acres of land affected by the fire were unharvested barley and wheat fields.
