Lucknow, BJP on Monday declared Bahoran Lal Maurya as its candidate for the by-election of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council to be held on July 12.

Minister of State Arun Saxena said Maurya was elected to the Assembly twice from Bhojipura constituency, in 1996 and 2017.

In the 2022 assembly elections, he lost the seat to SP's Shazil Islam by a margin of over 9,400 votes.

The by-election had become necessary due to the resignation of SP MLC Swami Prasad Maurya on February 20.

Swami Prasad Maurya left BJP and joined Samajwadi Party (SP) before the 2022 assembly elections and contested from Fazilnagar assembly seat of Kushinagar but lost.

Later SP made Swami Prasad Maurya a member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. However, there was opposition within the party over his comments related to 'Sanatan Dharma', after which he broke away from SP and formed Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party.

According to the Election Commission, the notification for the Legislative Council by-election was issued on June 25. The last day for nomination is July 2 and scrutiny will take place on July 3.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is 5th July.

The Election Commission said that voting will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on July 12 and counting of votes will begin at 5 pm on the same day.
