12 people died due to lightning in Patna, Bihar in the last 24 hours. This information was given in an official statement on Monday.

With this, the total number of deaths due to lightning since July 1 reached 42. These include 10 people who died on Sunday, and nine who died on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), three fresh deaths each were reported in Jamui and Kaimur, followed by two deaths in Rohtas, while one death each was reported in Saharsa, Saran, Bhojpur, Gopalganj.

CM Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

He appealed to the people to remain alert and stay indoors during the storm. He also urged people to follow the advisories issued by the disaster management department.

According to the Bihar Economic Survey 2023-24 tabled in the Assembly in February, the state is projected to see 400 deaths due to lightning and storms in 2022. The maximum deaths were from Gaya (46), Bhojpur (23) and Nawada. (21).

The survey report said that 9,687 deaths occurred due to various natural disasters and accidents in the state between 2018 and 2022.

The highest number of deaths in 2022–2023 were due to drowning (1,132), followed by road accidents (654) and lightning (400).

"Bihar allocated Rs 430.92 crore for management of disasters in 2022-2023, with the largest share given for local disasters like lightning and drowning (Rs 285.22 crore)," it said.
