Patna: More than 51 percent of the more than three lakh voters exercised their franchise till 5 pm on Wednesday in the by-election on Bihar's Rupauli assembly seat, an official said.

Voting started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm.

The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA Bima Bharti, who had won the seat for JD(U) several times in the past, but left the party to contest the Lok Sabha elections on an RJD ticket.

After the defeat in the parliamentary elections, she is contesting the by-election as an RJD candidate.

"Till 5 pm, 51.14 percent voting was recorded," the official said.

Over three lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise and will decide the electoral fate of 11 candidates.

JDU has fielded Kaladhar Prasad Mandal, who had contested the 2020 assembly elections as an independent from this seat.

Former MLA Shankar Singh, who left Union Minister Chirag Paswan's party LJP (Ram Vilas), is also contesting as an independent candidate.
