New Delhi: An agreement between India and Taiwan to facilitate trade in organically produced goods, including tea and medicinal plants, has come into force from July 8, the Commerce Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) will ease the export of organic products by avoiding dual certification, thereby reducing compliance costs, simplifying compliance requirements by following only one regulation and enhancing business opportunities in the organic sector.

It said the agreement will pave the way for export of key Indian organic products such as rice, processed food, green/black and herbal teas, medicinal plant products to Taiwan.

The implementing agencies for the MRA are India's Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Taiwan's Agriculture and Food Agency.

"The MRA for organic products between India and Taiwan has come into effect from July 8," it said in a statement.

Under the agreement, agricultural products produced and handled organically in accordance with the National Organic Production Program are permitted to be sold as organically produced in Taiwan with relevant documentation, including the display of the 'India Organic' logo.

"Similarly, agricultural products produced and handled organically in conformance with the Organic Agricultural Promotion Act and organically produced in India with an organic performance document (transaction certificate etc.) issued by a recognized certification body under Taiwanese regulation "Sale as produced from is permitted, including display of the Taiwan Organic logo," it said.
