Mangaluru (Karnataka), a BJP MLA here has criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks about Hindus during his Lok Sabha speech.

MLA Bharat Shetty branded Gandhi a "big madman" and suggested that he should be "slapped on the cheek inside Parliament" for his alleged "anti-Hindu" policy.

He was speaking at a meeting in his constituency on July 8.

The controversy stemmed from Gandhi's statement in which he described Hindus as "violent".

Shetty accused Gandhi of changing his religious stance depending on the areas he visited. He said Gandhi presented himself as an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva in Gujarat, an atheist in Tamil Nadu and a secularist in Kerala.

Despite the Congress Party winning 99 seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections, Shetty sarcastically remarked that Gandhi was considering the result as a "great achievement".

Criticizing Gandhi for keeping a picture of Lord Shiva, Shetty said, "The madman does not know that if Lord Shiva opened his third eye, he would be reduced to ashes."

The saffron party leader accused Gandhi of promoting "anti-Hindu policy" and expressed concern that Hindus would face threats in the future due to such leadership.

Commenting on Gandhi's performance in the recent general elections, Shetty said, "After securing only 99 Lok Sabha seats, Rahul Gandhi is claiming to have achieved a major feat."

Congress leaders, including former minister B Ramnath Roy, MLC Manjunath Bhandari, DCC president Harish Kumar and Ivan D'Souza, held a press conference in Mangaluru condemning Shetty.
