While the investigation continues, the former commanders, who are accused of crimes of terrorism and armed rebellion, are being detained in the maximum security prison of Chonchoro in the La Paz department, Xinhua news agency reported.

The prosecution team on Friday argued that flight risk and the possibility that the accused would hinder the investigation were the reasons for their detention.

Earlier Thursday, at least 17 people, mostly members of the military, were arrested for their roles in a failed coup in Bolivia, government minister Eduardo del Castillo said.

On Wednesday, hundreds of soldiers led by General Juan Jose Zuniga marched on Murillo Square, the center of Bolivia's political power. They forced their way into the old government palace in an unsuccessful attempt to remove President Luis Arce from office.

Immediate measures by the new army commander, José Sánchez, who ordered troops to return to their units and reaffirmed support for the government, were crucial to stabilizing the situation.

Additionally, President Arce condemned the coup attempt on Wednesday and stressed that "democracy must be respected."
