New Delhi [India], after NDA candidate Om Birla took over as speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha after a voice vote, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said on Wednesday that discussions are taking place about whether the position of vice president should go to the opposition and it will happen.

Raut also mentioned that the opposition did not ask for a division of votes and Birla was elected very peacefully.

"There is a tradition. We did not oppose it, but there is a tradition that elections should not be held. We showed you that we will be in front of you; we are doing it. We did not ask for division (of votes) and Om Birla was elected very peacefully. "Why is he opposing Om Birla? He is the same Lok Sabha Speaker who suspended more than 100 MPs at a time. This did not happen during the state of emergency," he said.

"The position of vice president should go to the opposition. Discussions continue and this will happen," he said.

Another Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi told ANI that it will be remembered in history that there was a candidate against Om Birla for the speaker's post.

"I want to congratulate Om Birla on his second term, but it will be recorded in history that there was a candidate against him... I want to remind the BJP that they would have to work according to the Constitution," Priyanka said.

DMK leader TR Baalu praised Om Birla and said he is the spokesperson of the common man.

"He was a close friend of mine for the past few years. He comes from the farming community and is the spokesperson of the common man," he said.

Furthermore, he said fielding a candidate against Om Birla was a way for the opposition to show their anger and protest.

"It is a democratic process in which we wanted to have our vice president, but they have not taken into account our request. We just wanted to show our anger and protest by presenting a candidate," Baalu added.

Earlier, in his first speech as Leader of the Opposition of the 18th Lok Sabha, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday congratulated BJP's Om Birla for being re-elected as Lok Sabha Speaker.

Dressed in a white kurta pajama, Rahul Gandhi, speaking as leader of the opposition, said: "I would like to congratulate you on the success of your election, because you have been elected for the second time. I would like to congratulate you on behalf of the entire opposition and the INDIAN alliance."

"This House represents the voice of the people of India and you are the final arbiter of that voice. The government has political power, but the opposition also represents the voice of the people of India and this time, the opposition represents significantly more of the voice of the people of India. Indian people than we did last time," said the Congress representative.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate and Kota MP Om Birla was elected Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha after Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved the motion for the same and was supported by the Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The motion was adopted by the House by oral vote.
