New Delhi: Criticizing the 'Agneepath-Agniveer' scheme does not amount to politicizing or criticizing the armed forces, Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary D Raja on Thursday said, adding that the Election Commission's instructions on this are misleading.

In a post on X, Raja also said that the election panel should focus on BJP leaders who are making open calls for changing the Constitution.

"ECI's instructions on Agneepath-Agniveer scheme are misleading and encroaching on the prerogative of political parties in making policies. The Agneepath scheme is a way of recruiting army personnel. The Election Commission on Wednesday wrote letters to BJP President J.P. Nadda and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge citing their respective replies to the notices issued on April 25. The Election Commission directed the BJP leader to refrain from giving speeches on religious and communal grounds. ,

He also asked the Congress not to politicize the defense forces and not make potentially divisive statements about the socio-economic composition of the armed forces. The commission was referring to comments made by top Congress leaders on the Agneepath plan.
