New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has sought the stand of the CBI and ED on the plea of ​​alleged middleman Christian Michel James seeking regular bail in the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland helicopter scam case related to the purchase of 1 VVIP helicopters.

Justice Jyoti Singh issued notice to the investigating agencies on the bail applications of the British national, who was extradited from Dubai in December 2018 and later arrested for his role in the alleged scam.

The judge, in two separate orders passed on April 22, asked counsel for the CBI and ED to file their status reports in three weeks and listed the case for hearing on May 16.

On February 7 last year, the top court had denied bail to James, who is currently in judicial custody, while rejecting his plea that he be released on the grounds that he had faced maximum punishment in the cases. Half of the work has been completed.

Earlier, the High Court had rejected his bail plea in both the CBI and ED cases in March 2022.On March 18, the apex court had refused to entertain James' plea seeking bail under Article 32 of the Constitution on the grounds that he was not charged with any offense other than those mentioned in the extradition order. can go and he should be given its benefit. The alleged scam pertains to the purchase of 12 VVIP helicopters from AgustaWestland.

The CBI, in its charge sheet, has alleged that the deal signed on February 8, 2010 for the supply of VVIP choppers worth 556.262 million euros caused an estimated loss of 398.21 million euros (approximately Rs 2,666 crore) to the exchequer.

The ED, in its charge sheet filed against James in June 2016, had alleged that he had received 30 million euros (about Rs 225 crore) from AgustaWestland.James is one of the three alleged middlemen being investigated in this case and the other two are Guido Haschke and Carlo Gerosa.
