New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency will probe the terrorist attack on an army convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch last year in which five soldiers were killed, officials said on Tuesday.

He said that the process of taking over the investigation of the case has started and a case will be registered soon.

Officials said the investigation would explore any "common angle" between last year's attack with recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, adding that involvement of Pakistan-based handlers in the case could not be ruled out.

On April 20, 2023, five Army personnel lost their lives and another was seriously injured when their vehicle caught fire following a terrorist attack in Bhata Dhurian area of ​​Poonch district.

The Army had said that the vehicle carrying the troops was fired upon by unidentified terrorists and caught fire due to possible use of hand grenades. The victims of the attack were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terrorism operations.

The NIA on Tuesday sent a team of its officers to assist the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the investigation of Monday's terrorist attack on an army convoy in Kathua.

Five army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed when a group of heavily armed terrorists ambushed a patrol on the rugged Machedi-Kindli-Malhar hill road near Badnota village in Lohai Malhar, about 150 km away.
