Bhubaneswar, BJP supremo Naveen Patnaik and state presidents of BJP and Congress Manmohan Samal and Sharat Patnaik respectively faced defeat in the Odisha assembly elections.

Although Patnaik won from his traditional Hinjili assembly seat in Ganjam district by a slim margin of 4,636 votes, the five-time former chief minister suffered a humiliating defeat to a novice political leader in the Kantabanji constituency of Bolangir.

The BJD supremo lost to BJP's Laxman Bagh in Kantabanji by 16,344 votes. While Baig got 90,876 votes, Patnaik got 74,532 votes.

This was the first time that Patnaik faced electoral defeat in his 26-year political career.

While the BJP came to power in Odisha by securing 78 seats in the assembly, party state unit president Manmohan Samal lost to BJD's Byomkesh Ray in Chandbali region by a margin of 1,916 votes.

While Ray got 83,063 votes, Samal could only get 81,147 votes.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Sharat Patnaik had to face an even worse fate as he finished fourth in Nuapada assembly constituency, getting only 15,501 votes.

The seat went to BJD candidate Rajendra Dholakia, who got 61,822 votes, while independent candidate Ghasiram Majhi came second by securing 50,941 votes.
