New Delhi [India], Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting in the national capital to review the overall preparedness for flood management in the country.

Union Minister Jai Shakti, C R Patil, Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, Secretaries of Home Ministries/Departments; Water resources, river development and river conservation; Earth Science; Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Road Transport and Highways; Chairman, Railway Board; Member & Secretary (In-charge) NDMA; Director General of NDRF and IMD; Chairman of CWC, NHAI and other senior officials of the concerned ministries attended the meeting.

This meeting took place in the Home Ministry located in North Block.

Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and some other states see landslides and other rain-related problems during monsoon. At present Assam is facing floods and lakhs of people are affected in many districts. Last month, Cyclone Remal also caused devastation across Tripura.

In Assam's Nagaon district, floods have severely affected around 6,000 people, with 35 villages in the district under Kampur and Raha revenue divisions inundated, and 1,089 hectares of crop area also inundated.

According to the flood report by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), around 3 lakh people in 19 districts have been affected by the floods.

More than 2.43 lakh people have been affected in Karimganj district alone. 979 villages under 48 revenue divisions of 19 districts of the state have been affected by the current wave of floods.

In the flood affected districts, 3326.31 hectares of crop area has been submerged in flood water.

Cyclone Remal has also caused heavy rains in Assam, causing widespread flooding. More than 29 people have lost their lives in the floods after Cyclone Remal.
