Gandhinagar, talented S. Ashwath won the title by defeating top seed Abhimanyu Mishra of United States in the fourth round of the ongoing World Junior Chess Championship here on Wednesday.

It was a brilliantly crafted game by Ashwath, who was given an early start in white by the Sicilian Najdorf.

Ashwath held his side in the middle game, which featured a lot of complications, and eventually turned the contest in his favor by attacking both his queens and his opponent's queens with both rooks.

For the world's youngest Grandmaster Abhimanyu, it was the second defeat after the first round defeat and the top seed still has a lot of work to do.

Meanwhile, Colombia's Jose Gabriel Cordoso emerged as the sole leader with four points after defeating Hungary's Gleb Dudin with the black pieces. It was an intense game in which the Colombian player won thanks to a well-calculated attack on the opponent's king.

Mayank Chalraborty and A R Ilamparthy are on top with 3.5 points each. Highest-rated Indian Pranav Anand also kept himself in the competition by defeating compatriot Manish Anton Cristiano.

In the girls' category, Divya Deshmukh lost her leading position as she was held to a draw by Switzerland's Sofia Hryzlova.

Azerbaijan's Nermin Abdinova emerged as the sole leader after defeating Kazakhstan's Liya Kurmangalieva.
