AGRA: Two police officers were suspended following the suicide of two brothers due to alleged harassment by policemen, officials said on Thursday.

He said that Sub-Inspector (SI) Hariom Agnihotri has been arrested, while the second accused Inspector Mukesh Kumar is absconding.

On June 22, Sanjay Singh, a resident of Roopdhanu village, committed suicide due to alleged harassment by Sadabad police.

According to the police, Sanjay's brother-in-law had run away with a minor girl.

He said that Sadabad police had asked Sanjay to produce his brother-in-law before June 22 in connection with the case, but he committed suicide on the same day.

On Monday, Sanjay's brother Pramod Singh, a home guard, also sacrificed his life. He left a suicide note, in which he blamed the Sadabad police.

After the brothers' suicide, the villagers demonstrated against the police and demanded action against the officer. Following this, SI Agnihotri and Inspector Kumar were suspended on the instructions of Aligarh Range Inspector General Shalab Mathur, police said.

An FIR was registered against the two officers under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide) at Barhan police station on Tuesday and SI Agnihotri was arrested the next day, police said.

Etmadpur Assistant Police Commissioner Sukanya Sharma said, "SI Agnihotri has been arrested and produced in the court. He has been sent to jail, while Inspector Kumar is still absconding and the search for him is on."

Union Minister SP Singh Baghel visited the village and met the victim's family.

He said that the UP government has given a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family.
