Guwahati: AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal on Tuesday admitted his defeat in his bastion Dhubri by over 10 lakh votes as a "big blow", saying it will take "some time" to do a detailed analysis of the results.

Addressing a press conference here late night, the three-time MP stressed that his party will make a comeback in the 2026 Assam assembly elections despite facing defeat on the three Lok Sabha seats it contested. .

Ajmal said, "This is a big shock. It will take some time to analyze what went wrong. We will find out what happened to the people, because these are the people who made me MP for three consecutive terms.,

He stressed that the party would conduct detailed research on what went wrong in Nagaon and Karimganj seats as well as Dhubri.

Rakibul Hussain, deputy leader of the Congress legislature party in Assam and a former minister in Tarun Gogoi's cabinet, contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time from Dhubri, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) stronghold.

Hussain defeated Ajmal by winning by a margin of 10,12,476 votes. While the Congress leader got 14,71,885 votes, the AIUDF chief could get only 4,59,409 votes.

The AIUDF leader also said that the faulty policies of the BJP government led to a "tsunami" against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India. He said, "There was a tsunami against possible changes in the Constitution, claim for more than 400 seats, attack on Babri Masjid, forced construction of Ram Temple and other issues. Apart from Muslims, Dalits and other marginalized communities voted against the BJP." "

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam contested the elections from Nagaon and stood third by getting 1,37,340 votes. Sahabul Islam Choudhary was in the fray in Karimganj and got only 29,205 votes.

Despite the poor performance, Ajmal said that the party will become stronger again in the coming years by removing its shortcomings. He said, "We have 2026 assembly elections and we will definitely win it. Congress almost disappeared after Modi came in 2014, but today the opposition party has made a comeback across the country. Across the world, people would have lost And then come back." .
