ITBP officials said the smuggled gold bars were seized from the possession of two persons, and it is the largest haul of smuggled gold ever seized by the paramilitary force.

An ITBP statement said that during patrolling in areas of Ladakh sub-sector, two suspects were spotted in Serigaple area, who after interrogation claimed that they were collecting medicinal plants. The suspects tried to dodge the ITBP personnel but their attempt to flee the spot was foiled by the patrol team. It said.

“Since it is summer time and chances of infiltration and smuggling are always high, we searched their tent and found 108 gold bars. A binocular, some knives, Chinese food, two ponies and two cell phones were also seized from their possession.'' It said both the accused were arrested and interrogated.

Following his disclosure, another suspect was detained.

"They have identified the two main accused as Tenzing Targe, 40, and Charing Chamba, 69, both residents of Henli village in Ladakh. The operation was conducted by the 21st battalion of ITBP active in Ladakh and Srinagar sectors," the statement said. "It was started with collaboration." He said the seized gold was smuggled into Indian territory and the force is in touch with Ladakh Police and will hand over the suspects to the Customs Department.
