- Maharashtra Stepwells Exhibition: Captivating Photographs.
The inaugural Maharashtra Stepwells Photography Exhibition is currently taking place in mid-September at Bandra Reclamation, Mumbai. Stepwells have been an integral part of Maharashtra's history, providing essential water sources for drinking, washing, bathing, and irrigation. These stepwells also served as cool havens for weary travelers, including caravans and pilgrims, seeking respite from the scorching heat. Maharashtra is dotted with stepwells, conveniently located every few kilometers along major pilgrimage routes such as Pune to Tuljapur and Nashik to Tryambakeshwar. Many of these stepwells were constructed during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, serving as resting spots for his armies and watering points for both men and animals. Due to their utilitarian purpose, these stepwells often lack intricate and delicate carvings. However, if all stepwells are restored and brought back to life, they could play a significant role in water conservation, potentially leading to a drought-free Maharashtra. Therefore, this photography exhibition showcasing Maharashtra's stepwells holds immense importance in raising awareness among the public.
