The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a popular tourist destination in India. The region is known for its tribal population, who showcase their creativity through various crafts. For those who enjoy collecting unique handicraft items from different places to enhance their interiors or as a form of wealth, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are the perfect place. The beauty of the islands is not only evident in their natural surroundings but also in the exquisite crafted items made by the local artisans.

One of the prominent crafts in the region is cane and bamboo work. Bamboo is abundantly available, while cane is also present in large quantities, although not always easily accessible. The islands are also home to a significant number of coconut trees. In addition to these natural resources, the islands boast a wealth of marine resources, including shells, coral, sea weeds, and driftwood. The shells found in the area include Turbos, Trancs, and Tortoise.

Cane and bamboo work is primarily carried out by settlers from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. They have the skill to create a variety of items based on provided designs. When left to their own devices, they often replicate designs from old catalogues. Women use beautiful cane baskets made from slender cane twigs that are sturdy and do not break to carry market produce and for storage. A more affordable type of cane and bamboo work is used by laborers involved in construction projects. Additionally, furniture made to order is a common product of this craft. It is estimated that there are around 50 artists engaged in cane and bamboo work in the Andaman Islands.

Woodwork is another craft that is local to the Andamans. The administration also offers training in carpentry. Some units specialize in creating furniture and other articles using ornamental woods like Paduak, marble wood, and Chui. Tabletops made from Paduak burr are a unique item produced in the region. The industries department operates a production center, and the government sawmill at Chatham has a workshop that contributes significantly to the overall production.

Lastly, shell craft is also a notable craft in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Unfortunately, no further information is provided about this craft in the given text.
